Wandering Around Shining Rock

This past Friday, I decided to hike the Investor Gap and Art Lobe Trails located in the Shining Rock Wilderness area. The weather was good for hiking with little chanch of rain. As I hiked deeper into the Shining Rock Wilderness, I was struck by the breathtaking views of the landscape. The fall colors painted a mesmerizing palette of muted and vibrant earth tones, a sight that I refer to as “mulch!”

The majestic views of the mountains, expansive grassy balds, and diverse foliage surrounded me, making me feel like a privileged trespasser in someone’s enchanting fantasy realm.

Every bend, every switchback, and every step I took in elevation or descent, presented me with a unique blend of colors and vistas. Most of the time, I found myself alone in this private world, a sanctuary where I could recharge my spirit, mind and body in the beauty of nature.

However, the true treasure of this wilderness was not solely mine; it was a gift shared with all who choose to escape their everyday lives and immerse themselves in the wonders of the world that God had blessed us with.

I was fortunate enough to share this incredible adventure with solo hikers and backpackers who were determined to explore the highlands further, traversing islands of coniferous and deciduous forests. Young families and older couples flocked to the higher peaks, including the Tennent and Black Balsam Mountains. Many of these hikers were accompanied by their leashed dogs, who politely yielded to other hikers passing by on the trail.

Small groups of hikers gathered around rock outcroppings, sharing the awe-inspiring views and pointing out landmarks such as the iconic Mount Pisgah and the enigmatic Looking Glass Rock. One hiker described the fascinating story behind Looking Glass Rock’s name. In winter, the water that would cascade off the rock’s surface would freeze, creating a mesmerizing reflection that resembled a looking glass.

Sharing the trail and the vast expanse of Shining Rock and the Blue Ridge Mountains rekindled cherished memories of my youth, particularly the times when my young family would embark on hikes with my Mom and Dad to the Black Balsam peak. We would be eager to await the opportunity to find a location where we enjoyed lunch with my parents, surrounded by the breathtaking views. While we ate our meal, we would keep a watchful eye on our kids, who would eagerly explore the mysteries of the grassy balds, with imaginations running wild.

I felt very blessed to witness so many individuals and families lost in the beauty of our mountains and its magical vistas. It is my hope they too will cherish the memories of that day and return to create new memories from their adventures and challenges.
